The owners of a residential property in Tamworth wanted to make better use of their large triple garage.
The space had bags of potential but was mainly used for storage. With careful planning, the brief was to transform the garage into a multi-functional space featuring a dedicated home gym and space for one vehicle, while retaining essential storage.
The Challenge
The challenge was to create a comfortable, purpose-built gym that the owners would actually want to spend time in.
New bi-fold doors would bring plenty of natural light into the gym, but installing them required structural alterations and supporting steel. The new space needed to be separated from the remaining garage, insulated and finished internally, with suitable flooring, lighting and electrical services.
Careful planning was needed to bring the different elements together in the right order, while ensuring the finished gym was tailored to the family’s needs.
What We Did
IL Solutions managed the conversion from the initial structural work through to the internal fit-out.
Part of the garage was partitioned off, leaving space for a car, while a new opening was created for bi-fold doors. Structural requirements were assessed, allowing the correct steel support to be specified and installed before the doors were fitted.
The new gym was thermally boarded and plasterboarded, with the walls and ceiling finished ready for use. Specialist gym flooring was installed, together with new lighting, sockets and a separate electrical supply.
Window tinting was added to allow in natural light without excessive direct sunlight. Provision was also made for a wall-mounted TV.
IL Solutions liaised with Building Control and coordinated trades throughout the project, from strip-out and structural alterations to final decoration and second-fix electrical work.

The Result
The previously underused garage is now a practical multi-purpose space, giving the homeowners a dedicated, fully finished gym without sacrificing the benefits of their original garage.
One parking space was retained, while the roof space was boarded to provide additional storage. Careful planning allowed the owners to gain a completely new room while retaining the parking and storage that made the original garage useful.
