Breathing New Life into a Period Cottage

Refreshing external joinery to prepare a property for sale, without losing its character.

Project Overview

Project: Residential

Location: Rolleston-on-Dove, Staffordshire

Sector: Residential

Service: External refurbishment

Client Profile

The owner of a traditional period cottage in Rolleston-on-Dove, Staffordshire, was preparing the property for sale. Years of exposure to the elements had left the timber windows, doors and external joinery in poor condition, affecting the property’s appearance and its kerb appeal.

Replacing the original windows would have meant a significant investment. Instead, we improved the property's presentation while retaining its original character and keeping costs under control.

The Challenge

At first glance, the work appeared to be a straightforward decorating project. However, once the existing paintwork was removed, the extent of the wood’s deterioration became apparent.

Much of the timber was rotten. Gaps allowed wind and rain to penetrate the property, and draughts were noticeable. Damaged sections required careful repair before any decorating work could begin. Simply painting over the damage would have delivered a poor finish and failed to address the underlying issues.

Services Delivered

  • Timber & joinery repairs
  • Surface preparation
  • Window and door refurbishment
  • External decorating
  • Precision finishing

What We Did

IL Solutions carefully removed the failing paintwork and repaired damaged timber using specialist materials to rebuild rotten and weathered sections wherever possible.

Every window, door and timber detail was individually assessed, allowing the team to preserve the original joinery rather than replacing it unnecessarily. Once the repairs were complete, multiple coats of paint were applied to provide a durable, high-quality finish that complemented the cottage's traditional character.

The Result

The completed project dramatically improved the appearance of the cottage while preserving its original features.

By recommending repair over replacement where appropriate, IL Solutions helped the client prepare the property for sale without the additional cost and disruption of installing new windows and external joinery.

Carefully repairing damaged timber also helped reduce draughts around the original windows, making the cottage more comfortable while retaining its period character.
