Replacing a Hotel Kitchen Ceiling Without Disrupting Service

Working around day-to-day operations to completely upgrade the ceiling and lighting in a busy commercial kitchen

Project Overview

Sector: Hospitality

Location: Reading

Project: Commercial kitchen ceiling and lighting upgrade

Programme: 4 nights

Working pattern: Overnight

Client Profile

The client operates a busy hotel in Reading, with a commercial kitchen serving guests throughout the day. When the existing ceiling and lighting system needed replacing, closing the kitchen for a refurbishment wasn't a practical option.

IL Solutions was appointed to replace the ceiling system and install new LED and emergency lighting while coordinating work around the hotel's normal kitchen operations.

The Challenge

The hotel needed its commercial kitchen to be brighter and more practical. Existing ceiling tiles were obsolete. They didn’t fit the overhead grid system correctly, and the lighting system needed an upgrade.

The biggest challenge was timing.

Work couldn't begin until the end of service (around 23:00) and had to finish early to allow the hotel cleaning team to prepare the kitchen for reopening at 6:00 am.

That left IL Solutions with a tightly controlled overnight window in which to complete each stage, make the area safe and hand it back ready for use.

Removing the old ceiling revealed redundant cabling and previous installations above the grid. The team needed to assess and work safely around what they uncovered as the project progressed.

What We Did

A phased overnight programme allowed the kitchen to remain operational throughout the refurbishment.

Existing tiles, ceiling grid and lighting were carefully removed before a new grid system was installed. New washable mineral fibre ceiling tiles were fitted, together with upgraded LED and emergency lighting. Temporary lighting was used while the electrical work progressed.

Kitchen equipment and surrounding work areas were carefully protected throughout, helping maintain the hygiene standards required in a commercial food preparation environment.

With between three and six operatives on site each night, including two electricians, careful coordination between trades helped keep the programme moving efficiently.

The Result

The entire project was completed in four nights, and importantly, the hotel kitchen remained available for normal service throughout.

The new white ceiling tiles and LED lighting created a brighter, cleaner and more spacious environment, while the washable ceiling tiles provided a more practical finish for a commercial kitchen.

Key Outcomes

  • Project completed in four nights
  • No interruption to normal kitchen service
  • New washable ceiling system
  • Upgraded LED and emergency lighting
  • Brighter, cleaner working environment

Lessons from this project

Out-of-hours working can keep essential facilities running.

Careful overnight planning enabled a significant refurbishment to be completed without taking the hotel's kitchen out of service.

Coordinated sequencing makes restricted working windows manageable.

Strategically managing the strip-out, ceiling installation, and electrical works enabled each stage to be completed and the kitchen handed back ready for use every morning.

The right specification matters in demanding environments.

Washable ceiling tiles and upgraded lighting provided a practical, durable finish better suited to the needs of a busy commercial kitchen.
